Report
In 1990 Vincent Gallagher established the SVP Conference in
our Parish and we have
been active ever since undertaking a wide range of
activities.
We have recently elected new
officers and the membership now stands at six plus two
auxiliary members, this does not include our Spiritual
Director the Reverend Deacon John Cliffe. With the average
age at 73 years we are always in pursuit of new members. Our
S.V.P. meeting takes place on the 1st Monday of each month
in the Haydock Room are all most welcome to come along to
see what we do.
Having received a generous
grant from the Daniel Haughton Charity we were able to
distribute Christmas food parcels to 28 needy families.
You may have recently read in
the Lancashire Evening Post that each month 60 food parcels
have been given out by Preston Churches, organised by the
Salvation Army, an increase of 50% over previous months.
This indicates that there are an increasing number of
families which need support in the Preston area.
During Lent we collected from
our parishioners towels and toiletries, which we distributed
to three local charities:-
|
Women's Refuge |
- |
victims of domestic violence |
|
Emmaus |
- |
homeless |
|
Merryweathers |
- |
young homeless |
Below are details of the
number of people/families helped this year by our parish
S.V.P. members.
Please help us to sustain
Christ's message,
'To
seek and find those who are forgotten.'
We do try and seek the genuine
cases.
Finally to all our parishioners, thank you once again for
your prayers and generosity.
Your local S.V.P. contact
is Mr James Lowery Tel: 01772 861067
Our mission is to seek out
genuine cases of people in need within our parish area, this
covers Cottam, Ingol and Tanterton.
We receive referrals from our
parishioners, friends and local community agencies.
We try to provide whatever
support is needed; this may be common sense advice with
day-to-day problems and where help can be found within the
local community or from local government agencies, emotional
support during difficult times or a friendly face to visit.
We visit families, people who
are ill, the elderly both in their own homes and in
residential care, and people in hospital.
In total during the last year
our small group carried out over 245 individual visits.
